    Moroccan medical insurance: pre-existing illness reimbursement

    Each company in the private sector signs a contract with an insurance company through an intermediary. The contract usually has medical insurance coverage for each employee, his spouse and kids. These contracts usually have so many clauses and the person reading them might overlook some of the important details when reading the contracts.

    In Morocco, most of the insurance companies if not all of them have a clause in the contract that specifies that any person who has an illness prior to joining the company cannot be reimbursed for the medical files related to that illness. YES. You read that correctly “CANNOT BE REIMBURSED FOR AN ILLNESS THAT HE OR SHE HAD BEFORE JOINING THE COMPANY. “ Is this fair to the employee? No. The employee, his spouse, or his kids should be able to get reimbursed by the insurance. While the contract cannot include and cover everything, the employee didn’t choose to get sick or to have that illness. He or she is just dealing with it because they have to.

    Dear candidates,

    Whether you are experienced or not, if you, your spouse or kid have a health issue, then you should get informed before joining a new company. Can you afford to not get reimbursement for a pre-existing health condition? Think about it. I am sure that most candidates do not pay attention to this detail but this is very important for many people. It cannot be overlooked.

    Dear employers,

    I know that a medical insurance contract has a lot of pages and it is possible that you missed this detail while skimming through the contract. HOWEVER, next time you negotiate a contract with an insurance intermediary, pay attention to this detail. Do you want to lose the opportunity to have a great employee in your team because of this detail? I am sure that most of the employees do not know about this until they join the company and start sending their medical files to your insurance provider. Some medication is very costly and anyone who has a serious condition will not hesitate to leave your company if the insurance doesn’t cover their medication. Salary is not always the only thing that is attractive in a job offer. This issue can make employees very stressed out and even less productive.

    Dear insurance agents,

    You know that the competition is FIERCE so think about this detail when you negotiate your contracts with any company. You know that if the company is satisfied with 1 contract, it can negotiate other contracts with you (accident insurance, car insurance, or office insurance for instance). The company can even recommend your services to other companies.

    In every company, there are a lot of medical files sent to the insurance through the intermediary every single week. Several files have a chronic illness that was there before the employee joined the company.
    Companies should be very careful when negotiating their insurance contracts to avoid turnover and to avoid missing out on great candidates who might be a great addition to their teams. Do you agree?
